Mammootty aka Muhammad Kutty Ismail Paniparambil is a well-known India Film actor best known for his National award-winning movies like Mathilukal, Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, Ponthan Mada,Vidheyan and Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar. Personal Life Mammootty was raised in the village of Chempu near Vaikom in Kottayam district, Kerala. He married Sulfath in 1979. They have two children, Surumi and Dulquer Salmaan.His younger brother Ibrahimkutty is also an actor. Ibrahimkutty's son Maqbool Salmaan is also a film actor. Career Life He made his first debut in the film Anubhavangal Paalichakal in 1971. The film was directed by K. S. Sethumadhavan.After seven years gap, the actor got good opportunities to act in movies like Mela, Vilkkanundu Swapnangal. The actor won his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Supporting Actor in the film Ahimsa. In the 1980s, he appeared in more than 200 films in various roles, which is marked as a golden era of the actor's career. The actor received critical acclaim during the 1990s for showcasing his fascinating acting skills in front of audiences. His stellar performance in the movies like Boothakkannadi,Dr.Bahbasahed Ambedkar,Ponthan Mada and Vidheyan are popular in Malayalam Film Industry. Mammootty has also acted in a few non-Malayalam movies which include Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and English films. In 1990, he made his Tamil debut in Mounam Sammadham, directed by K. Madhu. He has acted in Tamil films for directors including K. Balachander (Azhagan), Mani Ratnam (Thalapathy), Fazil (Kilippechu Kekkavaa), N. Linguswamy (Aanandham) and Rajiv Menon (Kandukondain Kandukondain) (1993). He played the role of Anantha Sharma in K. Vishwanath's Telugu film Swathi Kiranam (1992). In 2012,he acted in the Kannada-Malayalam bilingual film Shikari. He made his debut in Hindi films through Thriyathri, which was released in 1989, though his first film as a leading actor was Dhartiputra. He starred in the biographical film Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar, directed by Jabbar Patel, which was in English. He also appeared in Sau Jhooth Ek Sach (2004). Mammootty has had many of his Malayalam films dubbed into Telugu and Tamil cinema such as Doubles, Chattambinaadu, Parunthu, Annan Thambi, Thommanum Makkalum, Sethurama Iyer CBI and Pazhassi Raja among others. Awards Mammootty won the Best Actor Award in 2025 for his stellar performance in the horror thriller drama Bramayugam. His commanding screen presence and powerful portrayal earned him widespread acclaim, once again proving why he remains one of Malayalam cinema’s most revered performers. Over his illustrious career, Mammootty has received numerous accolades, including three National Film Awards for Best Actor, eight Kerala State Film Awards, and thirteen Filmfare Awards South. In recognition of his remarkable contributions to Indian cinema, he was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1998. He has also been conferred honorary doctorates by the University of Kerala (January 2010) and the University of Calicut (December 2010).
