Sholay 4K Re-release: Catch Amitabh Bachchan & Dharmendra’s Timeless Classic on the Big Screen

Today, Sholay is celebrated as one of Bollywood’s most loved movies, known for its unforgettable songs, iconic characters, and legendary dialogues. Sholay earned a lifetime worldwide collection of about ₹35 crore, including ₹15.5 crore from India. Though it opened to just ₹8 lakh on its first day and was initially seen as a flop, the film quickly picked up and created history. Over the years, it became a cult classic and remained India’s highest-grossing film for nearly two decades.

The 1975 classic Sholay, directed by Ramesh Sippy, featured a legendary ensemble cast including Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, and Amjad Khan. Written by the iconic duo Salim–Javed, the film introduced some of Bollywood’s most memorable characters, Veeru, Jai, Thakur, Gabbar, and Basanti. Sholay – The Final Cut, a fully restored 4K edition of the iconic 1975 masterpiece, is set to release in 1,500 theatres across India on December 12, 2025. For the first time ever, audiences will get to experience the film’s original ending on the big screen. This grand re-release celebrates the 50th anniversary of Ramesh Sippy’s legendary epic, which remains one of the most influential films in Indian cinema history.

Sholay tells the story of Jai and Veeru, two small-time criminals hired by ex-police officer Thakur Baldev Singh to capture the feared dacoit Gabbar Singh. Thakur wants justice for his family, whom Gabbar brutally destroyed. In Ramgarh, Veeru falls for the lively Basanti, while Jai forms a quiet connection with Radha. After several fierce clashes, the duo defeats Gabbar, but Jai tragically sacrifices his life in the process.
