Tamil Upcoming Big Movie Releases: Tamil cinema has a packed release calendar in the coming months, with several high-profile films starring some of the industry's biggest names preparing for theatrical release. From Dhanush's heist thriller Kara to Vijay's much-discussed Jana Nayagan and Rajinikanth's Jailer 2, multiple large-scale productions are generating attention for different reasons.

Here is a look at some of the major upcoming Tamil films expected to remain among the most discussed releases of 2026.

Kara - Releasing April 30

Dhanush headlines Kara, an upcoming Tamil heist action thriller directed by Vignesh Raja. The film is backed by Vels Film International in association with Think Studios.

The story is expected to revolve around a high-stakes crime setup, with Dhanush playing the title character. Mamitha Baiju plays a key role alongside a supporting cast that includes K. S. Ravikumar, Jayaram, Karunas and Suraj Venjaramoodu.

With music by G. V. Prakash Kumar, the film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on April 30, making it one of the immediate theatrical releases this week.

Karuppu - Releasing May 14

Suriya returns to the big screen with Karuppu, an action drama directed by RJ Balaji. Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, the film also stars Trisha Krishnan in a lead role.

Apart from Suriya and Trisha, the cast includes Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika and Yogi Babu.

The screenplay has been developed by a team of writers alongside RJ Balaji, and the music has been composed by Sai Abhyankkar. The film is currently slated for release on May 14.

Jana Nayagan - Release Date Awaited

Vijay's Jana Nayagan remains one of the most discussed Tamil films of the year. Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, the political action thriller also features Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju.

The film has drawn extra attention as it is widely expected to be Vijay's final film before his full-time political entry. Though it was initially planned for an earlier release, delays and complications involving certification affected the schedule.

Recent industry reports suggest a possible May theatrical release, with May 8 being discussed, though an official confirmation is still pending.

Jailer 2 - Release Window Yet To Be Confirmed

Rajinikanth returns as Muthuvel Pandian in Jailer 2, the sequel to the 2023 hit Jailer. The film is written and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures.

The cast includes S. J. Suryah, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa. Music is once again handled by Anirudh Ravichander.

The makers recently confirmed that shooting has been completed, increasing speculation around the release date. While several reports hint at an August 2026 release, possibly during the Independence Day holiday period, the team has not yet announced an official date.

With multiple star-driven projects lined up, Tamil cinema's 2026 release slate is shaping up to be one of the busiest in recent times.
