Tamil Nadu New CM & Government Formation Updates: Vijay's TVK Faces Majority Test Amid Alliance Talks

Tamil Nadu New CM & Government Formation Live Updates: Government formation efforts in Tamil Nadu entered a crucial phase on May 7 as actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay continued discussions to secure majority backing after the 2026 Assembly election verdict produced a hung House. While Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, the party remains short of the majority mark needed to formally form the government.

Tamil Nadu New CM amp amp Government Formation Live Updates

Although the Indian National Congress has officially extended support to TVK, reports suggest that the Governor is yet to be satisfied that the party currently has the required numbers. Vijay, who met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to stake claim to form the government, is now expected to continue efforts to secure additional support from smaller parties and independent legislators.

Political developments also gathered pace after the Governor dissolved the 16th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly with effect from May 5. Meanwhile, speculation surrounding Vijay's possible swearing-in ceremony has continued, though reports indicate that the oath-taking may not take place immediately as alliance talks remain underway.

The Congress, which won five seats in the election, announced support to TVK with the condition that "communal forces" should not be part of the alliance. At the same time, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) publicly denied reports of any direct post-poll alliance with TVK.

Fresh political speculation also emerged after reports claimed that several AIADMK MLAs believed to be favouring support for TVK were moved to a resort in Puducherry, triggering discussions about possible differences within the party over government formation.

Updates on Tamil Nadu's next Chief Minister, alliance negotiations, government formation talks, and key political developments.
