Tamil Nadu CM Swearing-In Ceremony: Vijay To Take Oath Today; Time, Venue And TVK Coalition Details
Tamil Nadu CM Swearing-In Ceremony: C. Joseph Vijay is set to take oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10, marking a major political shift in the state following the 2026 Assembly election results. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at Nehru Stadium in Chennai at 10 AM, where several ministers from the new government are also expected to be sworn in alongside the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader.

The development comes after days of political negotiations and uncertainty over government formation in the 234-member Assembly. Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar appointed Vijay as the Chief Minister-designate after the TVK secured the backing of 120 MLAs, according to an official release issued by Lok Bhavan.
How TVK Secured Majority Support To Form Tamil Nadu Government
TVK emerged as the single largest party in the election by winning 108 seats. However, TVK's effective strength will come down to 107 since Vijay won from two constituencies and will have to vacate one seat, paving the way for a by-election. In the days following the results, TVK sought support from multiple parties in order to cross the majority mark of 118 needed to form the government.
The Indian National Congress extended support to TVK with five MLAs, while support also came from the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Together, these parties helped TVK cross the majority threshold in the Assembly.
The Governor has reportedly directed Vijay to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly on or before May 13. The upcoming confidence vote is expected to be one of the first major political tests for the new coalition government.
While Congress formally aligned with TVK after the election, the CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML indicated that they would continue to remain part of the broader DMK-led alliance even while backing the formation of government by TVK.
Political activity intensified in Chennai over the past few days as alliance talks continued between various parties. Support from VCK and IUML eventually played a key role in ending the uncertainty surrounding government formation.
Celebrations were reported at TVK offices and among party workers following confirmation that Vijay would form the next government in Tamil Nadu. The May 10 swearing-in ceremony is expected to draw senior political leaders, party functionaries, and invited guests from across the country.
