Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026: Polling for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections was held on April 23, with voters turning out across the state from the early hours of the morning. The electoral exercise, conducted across all 234 constituencies, will determine the next government in Tamil Nadu once results are declared.
Over 5.73 crore voters were eligible to cast their votes, deciding the electoral fate of 4,023 candidates in the fray. Polling began at 7 a.m. and concluded at 6 p.m. in a single phase.
Several prominent political leaders and public figures were among those who voted during the day. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin cast his vote in Chennai, while AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami voted in Salem. Actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay, along with actors Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ajith Kumar, Vikram, and others, were also seen at polling stations.
Actor Vijay Sethupathi, after casting his vote in Chennai, urged citizens to participate in the electoral process, calling it an important responsibility. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) also raised concerns over transport arrangements for voters, with party chief Vijay writing to the Election Commission seeking additional facilities and a possible extension of polling hours.
By the evening, polling concluded across the state, with officials beginning the process of sealing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). As of 5 p.m., the approximate voter turnout stood at 82.24%.
The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, while the tenure of the current Assembly is set to end on May 10.
