Jana Nayagan Release Supreme Court Hearing Latest Update: Vijay Starrer Faces Key Legal Test Today

Jana Nayagan Release Court Hearing Update: Jana Nayagan, the Tamil political action thriller directed by H. Vinoth and starring Vijay, remains caught in ongoing legal proceedings as the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case related to the film's certification today, January 15. The outcome of the hearing is expected to play a crucial role in determining when the film can proceed with its theatrical release.

Jana Nayagan Release Supreme Court Hearing Latest Update

Initially slated to hit cinemas on January 9, 2026, Jana Nayagan was postponed after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) did not issue a certificate in time. The film, produced by KVN Productions, was submitted for certification on December 24. According to a report by Indian Express, the CBFC's Examining Committee initially recommended a U/A 16+ certificate, subject to 27 cuts or modifications, all of which were accepted by the makers.

However, the situation took a turn on January 5 when the CBFC Chairperson referred the film to a Revising Committee, citing a complaint received from a dissenting member of the Examining Committee. The complaint reportedly argued that certain objections raised during the initial review were not properly recorded. This referral led to a delay, prompting KVN Productions to move the Madras High Court seeking relief.

The matter was first heard by Justice P.T. Asha of the Madras High Court, who directed the CBFC to grant certification, observing that the decision to constitute a Revising Committee after certification was recommended was "without jurisdiction." The judge also noted that the complaint appeared to be an afterthought. However, the CBFC challenged this order, stating that it did not get adequate time to file a detailed response. Subsequently, a division bench stayed the single judge's directive, effectively halting the film's clearance. As reported by Indian Express, the High Court has scheduled further hearing on the matter for January 20, after the Pongal holidays.

In parallel, the producers approached the apex court. According to a report by Live Law, a bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and A.G. Masih is set to hear the plea filed by KVN Productions today. The petition challenges the Madras High Court division bench's order that stayed the direction to immediately certify the film. The producers have argued that the CBFC Chairperson's decision to suo motu refer the film to a Revising Committee was legally unsustainable, a view earlier upheld by the single bench.
