Kannada Actor M S Umesh Passes Away At 80

M S Umesh Passes Away: Veteran Kannada actor Mysore Srikantayya Umesh, popularly known as M S Umesh, passed away on Sunday, November 30, at the age of 80 after a battle with cancer. According to Deccan Herald, he died at Kidwai Hospital, while Asianet reported that he had been fighting stage-four liver cancer and breathed his last surrounded by family.

Umesh's career in Kannada cinema spanned over six decades; as per a Times of India report, he acted in over 350 films. Renowned for his distinctive comic timing and ability to bring depth to character roles, Umesh worked with some of the biggest names in Sandalwood, including Dr. Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, Ambareesh, and Anant Nag.

He began his acting journey as a child artist in BR Panthulu's Makkala Rajya in 1960, marking the start of a career that bridged generations. Over the years, he became known for his expressive dialogue delivery and unique blend of humor and emotion.

Earlier this year, Umesh faced health challenges. Times of India reported that in October, he suffered a fall at his residence in JP Nagar, initially thought to be a leg and shoulder injury. Further medical tests revealed he was battling stage-four liver cancer, which had already spread to other organs, leading to the cancellation of planned surgery.

M S Umesh's Enduring Legacy

Umesh's portrayal of "Sithapathi" in the 1990 film Golmaal Radhakrishna is regarded as one of the standout comedic performances in Kannada cinema. Umesh received several accolades during his career. He won the Karnataka State Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1975 for his role in Kathasangama and Munitai. He was also honoured with the Karnataka Nataka Akademy Award and the Mahanagara Palike Award.

The news of his passing has drawn condolences from across the Kannada film industry. Deccan Herald reported that Shivaraj Thangadgi, Minister for Welfare of Backward Classes and Kannada and Culture, expressed sorrow over Umesh's death, calling him "one of the most talented actors the film industry has seen" and offering strength to his family and fans during this time.

M S Umesh's death marks the end of an era for Kannada cinema. From his early days as a child actor to his celebrated roles in comedy and drama, his contribution to the industry leaves behind a lasting legacy. Funeral and final viewing arrangements were reportedly made at his JP Nagar residence.
