Will Cillian Murphy Play The New Voldemort In Harry Potter Series? Actor Clears The Air
Cillian Murphy has categorically denied the rumours that he will portray Voldemort in the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series, noting the role will go to another actor. Ralph Fiennes praised the chosen cast member, while Murphy emphasised the difference between public chatter and real casting decisions. The series remains in development for a 2027 release.
Cillian Murphy has set the record straight on rumours linking the Oppenheimer star to Lord Voldemort in the upcoming Harry Potter series for HBO, making it clear that the role of the Dark Lord will go to someone else despite public support from original actor Ralph Fiennes. Speculation grew after Ralph Fiennes, who portrayed Voldemort in all eight Harry Potter films, publicly backed Cillian Murphy as a strong choice for the part. Fans then began to wonder if Cillian would lead the new adaptation of J.K. Rowling's novels as the feared villain.

Cillian Murphy Voldemort Harry Potter series casting rumours firmly dismissed
Cillian has firmly shut down the casting chatter. Asked by The Times whether the 49-year-old Irish actor was stepping into Voldemort's role for the Harry Potter series, Cillian replied, "I'm categorically not." Cillian then directly requested the publication, "Can you make that the headline?" removing any doubt about his involvement.
The actor also revealed that the online buzz barely reached him. Cillian said that life away from social media keeps such talk from his attention, and explained that managing public attention is not a natural skill, despite the increased spotlight after the success of Oppenheimer and long-running series Peaky Blinders.
Cillian Murphy Voldemort Harry Potter series speculation addressed on podcast and TV
Cillian had already rejected the Voldemort rumours earlier during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in 2025. When the host raised fan theories about the Harry Potter series, Cillian replied, "No. I mean, no. Genuinely. My kids show me on occasions, but like, no. I don't know anything about that."
During that conversation, Cillian also highlighted the challenge facing whoever eventually accepts the role. Cillian said, "I mean, also, it's just really hard to follow anything Ralph Fiennes does. The man is an absolute acting legend, so good luck to whoever is gonna fill those shoes." The remarks underlined Cillian's respect for Ralph Fiennes' original performance.
Ralph Fiennes, however, has sounded keen on seeing Cillian take over as Voldemort in the Harry Potter series. During Bravo's Watch What Happens Live, the Schindler's List actor responded to a suggestion that Cillian could play the Dark wizard. He said, "Cillian is a fantastic actor. That's a wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favour of Cillian. Yeah."
Speaking separately to The Times, Cillian expanded on why the Harry Potter speculation passed by unnoticed. "Being a personality is not what I am good at," Cillian said. Cillian continued, "But then existing in this world? Talking about yourself, going on f—g red carpets? It's not healthy if you start to believe this shit, and I'm really bad at it too." Cillian then added, "I'm an incredibly average person, really."
The new Harry Potter series is in active development at HBO with a new cast and is planned for a 2027 release. For now, though, Cillian has distanced from the idea of replacing Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort, while praise from Ralph Fiennes and fans keeps the conversation alive around whoever ultimately takes on the role.
