Prime Video has chosen Ryan Hurst to play Kratos in the live-action God of War series, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. The show is based on the PlayStation franchise and already holds a two-season order, with pre-production currently progressing in Vancouver and casting underway.

Hurst previously voiced and performed Thor in PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarök, giving Hurst direct experience with the game world and its tone. That performance earned a BAFTA Award nomination, which now adds weight to Hurst’s casting as Kratos in the television adaptation for global streaming audiences.
God of War series story and Kratos character
The God of War series will follow the story arc of the two most recent games, focusing on Kratos and ten-year-old Atreus. The pair travel to spread the ashes of Faye, who is Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, while both characters learn from each other through difficult choices and constant danger.
Across their journey in God of War, Kratos aims to guide Atreus towards becoming a wiser god, while Atreus tries to help Kratos understand how to act more human. This central relationship becomes the emotional core of the series and shapes how viewers see Kratos beyond the familiar violent past.
God of War mythology and Kratos background
Kratos, the main figure throughout God of War, is born a Spartan and later becomes a god. Raised in a strict warrior culture, Kratos rises to command armies for the homeland. That path changes after Kratos makes a fatal bargain with Ares, the Greek God of War, trading Kratos’ soul for victory.
Over ten hugely successful God of War games, Kratos defeats mortals, monsters, and gods, turning Kratos into a major pop culture figure. Kratos is recognised for a calm manner, ruthless fighting ability, and a tragic history. The live-action God of War series shifts focus to parenthood, with the father-son story driving the narrative.
