Accused: Pratibha Ranta On Working With Co-star Konkona Sen Sharma: A Secured Actor Always Make Sure...
Pratibha Ranta transitions from Laapataa Ladies to Accused, a Netflix film that probes trust within a troubled relationship. The role marks a deliberate shift to darker, intimate drama across platforms, emphasising artistic identity and collaboration with Konkona Sen Sharma.
After Laapataa Ladies turned Pratibha Ranta into a fresh face to watch, the actor chose Anubhuti Kashyap's Netflix film Accused as a bold follow-up. Pratibha picked the project despite warnings about risk, aiming to avoid repetition and build a distinct artistic identity with a complex, unconventional role.

Accused casts Pratibha as one half of a lesbian couple whose relationship faces strain when one partner is accused of sexual harassment at work. The film examines how trust shifts under scrutiny, while also asking how far love can stretch when serious allegations surface within an intimate bond.
Pratibha Ranta and Accused: choosing a risky second film after Laapataa Ladies
Pratibha recalls people questioning this choice. "So many people said 'are you sure you want to do a film like this? It's a big risk.' But I wanted to give it a shot and be in a space where I can differentiate myself as an artiste. I didn't want to repeat myself. It felt right," she says.
The decision followed a period of uncertainty after Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, became a critical milestone. "There was so much love coming in. My debut raised so many standards. I was like: will I ever be able to do something that would achieve what Laapataa did?" she says, recalling the pressure to choose wisely.
Pratibha Ranta, Accused and life after Laapataa Ladies
Pratibha explains that many scripts arrived after the film's release, yet most did not feel right. The confusion lasted until Anubhuti Kashyap narrated Accused. "Oh My God, I think I am able to feel myself in this space," she expresses, describing the moment the character and world finally resonated with personal instinct.
The actor had already shifted genres earlier, appearing in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's period series Heeramandi after Laapataa Ladies. With Accused, Pratibha stepped into a darker, intimate drama for Netflix, before moving again into Nikkhil Advani's Amazon Prime Series The Revolutionaries, reflecting a clear pattern of varied choices across formats and storytellers.
Pratibha shares that the mood on the Accused set supported this layered work. "During shooting, there was silence on set. Nobody was shouting and it was so rare to see that!" she adds, saying the calm environment allowed focus on difficult emotional beats, especially when charting the strain within the onscreen relationship.
Her collaboration with Konkona Sen Sharma on Accused was another defining part of the experience. Pratibha says, "I remember being nervous to meet her. She gave me so much space as an artiste to perform; it helped me. After pack-up, she'd be like let's go for a walk. I felt it helped us understand each other better and develop comfort, which showed on screen. A secure actor always makes sure that the co-actor also feels safe."
| Project | Format | Director | Platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laapataa Ladies | Film | Kiran Rao | Theatrical |
| Heeramandi | Series | Sanjay Leela Bhansali | Streaming |
| Accused | Film | Anubhuti Kashyap | Netflix |
| The Revolutionaries | Series | Nikkhil Advani | Amazon Prime |
Speaking about the emotional core of Accused, Pratibha notes that the story deals with loyalty under doubt. "When you love somebody, you give them the benefit of doubt. It's not easy to instantly believe they can do some wrong," she says, adding, "You don't want to give up on them, want to be there till the extreme end."
Pratibha's choices from Laapataa Ladies to Heeramandi, Accused and The Revolutionaries show a deliberate move across genres, platforms and collaborators. The actor leans towards stories that probe relationships and inner conflict, while using each project to step into new spaces, rather than repeating the success of an acclaimed debut.
